Love your Library: Your walls can speak volumes

Have you ever thought about how wonderfully calming your school library is?  Or could be? Your library is not only a wonderful hub for students but its learning resources, both hard copy and digital, encourage students to learn independently. It should be an inspiring space that supports reading, learning and wellbeing.

It may also be a space you use to hold large meetings where you are inviting visitors to the school.  Your library is for the education, enjoyment and entertainment of all members of the school community, as well as a place where you can enhance and expand the school’s curriculum.

Wall art depicting tree branches heavily laden with leaves against blue sky background. A revolving bookcase and seating are placed in front.
Library wall with mural in the foreground showing drawing of book on blue background. Wall art continues around the room. There are computers and office chairs at the back of the room.

Your library is a place where students research projects and learn about the world around them.  And whilst the days of completely silent libraries may be long gone in your school, your learning resource centre is, or could be, an oasis of calm, a community gathering space where students can go to escape the mayhem at break or lunchtime or study independently.

Mural of fern is shown on pale green background around the top edge of library entrance door with wording above the fern which reads "She reads books as one would breathe or, to fill up and live"
Mural depicting drawing of man seated cross legs on a pile of books on a blue background. To the right of the wall is timber-effect vinyl wall art with wording which reads "Reading is dreaming with open eyes"

How do you achieve this?  It’s not just the books and information technology within your library that are important: your surroundings are vital too if you want to exude an area of calm but also be an inspiring and motivational place.

Five computer screens are shown in front of a wall which has been been wrapped with vinyl wall art showing nature scene of tree branches and wood effect area with wording in decorative font.

Researchers have demonstrated that school libraries have a positive impact on student achievement, with students scoring higher on reading assessments regardless of their background.
